The 272nd maroon festival will once again celebrate the
legendary Maroons of Western Jamaica, the historic
descendants of runaway slaves, who were freed by the
Spanish and fled to Jamaica’s untouched South Coast in
pursuit of freedom, and who live there to this day.

This event dates back to the 19th Century and is celebrated
every year in January to mark their victory over the British
and to honour their hero, Cudjoe, who won the first Maroon
War. They commemorate the occasion with traditional
singing, dancing, playing of the drums and blowing of the
Abeng. Visitors will also get to partake in a variety of food
and drink at the newly constructed African-styled Bickle
(food) Village. Traditionally the cooking is done by men and
no salt is used.
